Mavis
Penney
Biography.
After a career of teaching
painting, drawing, photography and visual design to school age children
and college students, Mavis Penney’s work has come full circle.
Mavis Penney has returned to the painting that earned her thirty
years of participating in provincial and national group shows, two
solo exhibitions in the province’s Arts and Culture Centers
Art Galleries, as well as a one-year Canada Council Artist-in-Residence
Grant.
Merging diverse applications
of conventional art techniques, heritage crafts and multimedia design
that characterized the instruction she gave, Mavis Penney's most
recent paintings explore landscape and the environment by combining
digital imagery and traditional painting methods.
A graduate of Memorial
University, Concordia University and Sheridan College, Mavis Penney
is a long time proponent of the development and strengthening of
visual arts in the province. She has written art commentaries for
community newspapers and has served on regional and national Canada
Council juries. She currently represents Central Labrador on the
board of VANL (Visual Artists of Newfoundland and Labrador), and
is an active member of two community-based arts advocacy groups
in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
Mavis Penney's work is
represented in public collections of the province of Newfoundland
and Labrador and in numerous private Canadian and international
collections.
